Luminary Device

From Concept To Manufacture

Through a series of processes and iterations, I investigated form and material for light modulating potential and arrived at solutions that integrates concept, aesthetics and function towards designing and digitally fabricating a luminary device. I chose one of El Lissitsky’s ‘Prouns’ as the basis for my initial conceptual design development. I considered how the basic elements of architecture –volume, mass, color, space and rhythm are used to create dynamic architectonic compositions. I tried to integrate this sense of confusion, variety of shapes (as well as the specific pattern in the proun) and colors, into my luminary device. When looking at my device, you can see different shapes and colors from every side that you look at the device, leading the viewer to ask themselves why each side is different. I did leave one side of the device blank (no colors/shapes). Again, this leads to a sense of confusion, as to why one side of the device is plain, compared to the others. This also gives a feeling of opposition/opposites (multicolored with different shapes compared to a plain surface).
