PILOT BOAT LAUNCH

AND SEA TRIAL

In April 2021, I had the privilege of witnessing both the launch and sea trial of 3 sister pilot boats that were manufactured by SECO (Southern Engineering Co. Ltd) for the Tanzanian Ports Authority. The vessels have been designed to specification by Western Australia-based award-winning naval architectural firm, Southerly Designs, having a length of 20 meters, depth of 3 meters, and a draft of 1.7 meters. They have been named by the client as RUBANI 1 – Dar es Salaam Port, RUBANI 2 – Tanga Port and RUBANI 3 – Mtwara Port.

Constructed in steel with an aluminum superstructure and classed by Bureau Veritas, the deckhouse includes seating for two (2) crew and is designed for up to twelve (12) passengers. Accommodation for three (3) crew is also provided below the deck. Each of the vessels is powered by two MAN D2862 LE 432 engines, which develop a total output of 1764 kW at 2,100 rpm, coupled with a ZF gearbox, delivering a maximum speed of twenty (20) knots.
